What a thread lift is

A thread lift passes sutures under the skin and uses them to hold tissue in a higher position. The threads carry small barbs or cones angled back towards the point they are anchored from, so tissue slides one way along the thread and catches the other. Draw the thread up, and the tissue it has caught comes with it.

The threads used now are absorbable — polydioxanone and similar materials — so the thread itself is broken down by the body over months. That is the first thing to hold onto, because it sets up the question that matters: if the thread is gone, what is holding the lift?

What it is for, and what it is not for

Thread lifting addresses position. Tissue that has descended — the mid-face, the jawline, the upper neck — is physically moved and held.

It does not address skin quality, and it does not add volume. If the complaint is texture or tone, this is the wrong treatment; if it is a hollow, filler is a different tool. And it is not surgery: it repositions tissue on a suture rather than removing or resecting anything.

How long it lasts, from the published follow-up

This is where marketing and evidence diverge most sharply, so the numbers here are given with the study that produced them.

A 2017 review of facial thread lifting reports one series of 117 patients followed for 12–24 months who maintained 70% of the initial correction, and 96 patients followed for 36 months who maintained 60%. So: it fades, gradually, and a meaningful part of what you paid for is gone within a few years.

That same review's overall conclusion is unusually direct for this field, and worth reading as written: "this review suggests that it should not yet be adopted as an alternative to rhytidectomy" — rhytidectomy being a surgical facelift. It describes thread lift results as subtle and of short duration by comparison.

A clinic quoting you a single confident duration is not quoting the literature.

How often something goes wrong

Complications are common but mostly minor. A 2026 meta-analysis of 26 studies covering 2,827 patients found these pooled rates:

Read that table honestly: roughly a third swell, a quarter bruise, and one in ten can see or feel the threads. Those are not rare events, and they are worth knowing before rather than after. The 2017 review additionally lists thread migration, granuloma, and — in severe cases — facial nerve injury and Stensen's duct rupture.

The 2026 authors' conclusion is that thread lifting is "generally safe" but needs "careful patient selection and technique mastery by practitioners". In other words, who does it matters.

Thread lift compared with the energy devices

Korean clinics often present thread lifting alongside Ultherapy, Thermage, or InMode as though they were interchangeable options for "lifting". They are not.

  • A thread moves tissue mechanically. You see the change on the day.
  • An energy device heats tissue to provoke tightening over the following months. It moves nothing, and the change is gradual and generally smaller.

Someone proposing both should be able to say what each is doing in your case. If the answer is that they go well together, ask what specifically each one is for.

Questions to ask before you agree

  • Which thread product and material, and what is its Korean name? Look it up on the device portal.
  • How many threads, placed where, and anchored to what?
  • What is your plan if a thread becomes visible, palpable, or extrudes?
  • What happens if that occurs after I have flown home — who treats it, and at whose cost?
  • Are you proposing this instead of, or as well as, an energy device — and why?

The bottom line

A thread lift repositions sagging tissue on absorbable barbed sutures, and the result is immediate. Published follow-up shows a substantial part of the correction lost over one to three years, and a review of the literature concluded it should not yet be treated as an alternative to a surgical facelift. They do different things. A thread physically repositions tissue and you see it immediately; ultrasound and radiofrequency devices aim to tighten over months and reposition nothing. A clinic proposing both at once should be able to say what each is for in your case.

Which thread product and material, and its Korean name so you can look it up. How many threads and where. What happens if a thread becomes visible, palpable, or extrudes — and who deals with that once you have flown home.
